PROJECT OVERVIEW
KALR Group was appointed to carry out paving refurbishment works to the first-floor garden and courtyard areas at the Royal College of Nursing in London.
The existing installation, laid over 25 years ago, included paving slabs with stone margins. Our works involved removing the existing crushed stone from the perimeter areas and replacing them with matching paving slabs and installation system, using slabs that replicated the original size, colour and finish.
The project required careful planning, detailed logistics and a sensitive approach to minimise disruption within a live, occupied building while delivering a high-quality finish that seamlessly integrates with the existing paving.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

CHALLENGE
Sourcing Matching Materials
The original paving was over 25 years old, making it difficult to source identical slabs.
SOLUTION
We carefully sourced slabs that matched the original size, colour and finish, and used the same installation system.

CHALLENGE
Logistics and Access
Several tonnes of materials had to be transported to and from the first-floor level within a live building.
SOLUTION
Detailed planning, phased deliveries and manual handling strategies ensured safe and efficient movement of materials with minimal disruption.

CHALLENGE
Noise and Dust Control
Each slab required cutting on site within an occupied building, making noise and dust a major concern.
SOLUTION
We implemented strict dust suppression and noise control measures, including specialist equipment and careful sequencing of works.
THE OUTCOME
The refurbished garden and courtyard areas now provide a clean, durable and visually consistent finish, enhancing the first-floor amenity spaces at the Royal College of Nursing.
The new paving integrates seamlessly with the original installation, preserving the character of the building while improving the appearance and usability of the space for staff and visitors.
